cor·bels)
supporting stone bracket: a bracket of brick or stone that juts out of a wall to support a structure above it.
transitive verb (past cor·beled, past participle cor·beled, present participle
cor·bel·ing, 3rd person present singular cor·bels).
1. lay masonry units to form projection: to lay stones or bricks in layers so that each juts out above the one below to form a supporting bracket
2. support with corbels: to support a cornice or other structure on corbels
[14th century. From Old French, literally "little raven," from corp "raven," from Latin corvus (see corvine ); from its original beaklike profile from being cut slantwise.]
